The Yankees’ six-game skid reverberated throughout the organization, from Posada to Rodriguez, from Soriano to Girardi, who said before the game that he sensed it.
“Our guys aren’t used to losing,” he said. “They’re used to winning. And being winners and putting up big numbers.”
Even as Derek Jeter’s struggles appear to have returned — he was 1 for 5 with three strikeouts and a run batted in — no one has foundered recently more than Rodriguez, whose average had plummeted 128 points, to .242, over the last three weeks.
Before the game Girardi said that Rodriguez looked “physically fine” but that he might be checked by team doctors on Friday, when the Yankees begin a three-game series against the Mets.
The nature of any potential physical problem was unclear, though it is possible that his surgically repaired right hip could be a factor. Rodriguez had an operation to repair a torn labrum in 2009, causing him to miss the first month of the season, and last June tendinitis in his right hip caused him to miss four games.
